ANCWL condemns assault of Ekurhuleni metro policewoman

24 August 2009

The African National Congress Women´s League (ANCWL) condemns the assault over the weekend of a Johannesburg Metro policewoman by an off-duty male superintendent of the South African Police Services (SAPS) in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni.

The Johannesburg Metro Police officer was assaulted over the issuing of a fine to a daughter of the superintendent who had ignored a stop sign.

“The ANCWL is further appalled that the female officer was assaulted while on duty during the National Women´s Month – a month meant to commemorate the role of women. Despite public education on the rights of women, the scourge of gender-based violence continues in homes, communities and at workplace,’ said ANCWL Deputy President Nosipho Ntwanambi.

"Cases of this nature undermine our country´s fight against crime and violence against women and should be condemned in the strongest possible terms. It also undermines our efforts to promote road safety on our roads," added Ntwanambi.

The country´s Constitution makes us all equal before the law and protects our rights. We therefore, want the law to take its course and for this case to receive priority. We also call on the SAPS to ensure that disciplinary processes are instituted without delay.

Issued by the ANCWL.
