STATEMENT OF ANC WOMEN'S LEAGUE NEC

10 May 2008

The ANC Women's League had a Workshop on the Young Women's Desk on the 9th May 2008 and National Executive Committee on 10 May 2008 to discuss conference papers.

The workshop agreed that we need to defend the gains we have made in this conjuncture by leveling the playing field and the environment for young women and develop future leadership for the WL. The programmes of the Women's League should include the programmes of young women so as to mentor young women. This will help us to ensure that the leadership of the ANC and ANC WL develops organically within the structures of the organisation. The launch of the Young Women's Desk will take place on the 8th June 2008.

The NEC looked into conference documents, which cover Organising women and Building the ANC Women's League. Women and Social Transformation, which includes the issues of health, education, safety and security, housing, environment, social development and transport, Women and Economic development which includes rural development, legislature and governance as well as international relations. These papers also touched on achievements and gains we have made throughout our history as well as to how we can defend the gains we have made including the gains made at the 52nd conference of the ANC such as equal representation and the women's ministry.

Conference discussion documents will be discussed in our branches, regions and provinces. We will also have a media launch of the documents so as to initiate a public discourse and battle of ideas on the issues affecting women.

The NEC reiterated the decision of the last NEC of fighting the Like of high food and energy prices because these impact negatively on the lives of women. The NEC agreed to support the campaigns led by civil society and COSATU.

The NEC condemned the death of Randy Gule grandchild of the Mohlomi and Gule family because of the greed and uncaring attitude of a selfish Life Fourways private hospital .We support the investigation by the department of health and call upon the government to speed up the Health Insurance System so as to fight the gap between the poor and the rich and to also ensure that opportunities that we gained through our liberation benefit the ordinary people of our country.

The Theme of the Conference is:
" Mobilise and Unite Women Towards a Caring Society".
" 95 years of a Revolutionary Struggle"
