STATEMENT OF THE WOMEN’S LEAGUE ON ABUSE OF WOMEN

19 February 2008

The ANC Women’s league condemns in the strongest terms the barbaric and disgusting treatment meted to young innocent Nwabisa Ngcukana and many others who have suffered at the Noord Street taxi rank in South Africa.

The Women’s League calls upon the Department of Transport and Safety to act without impunity. Leaders of the Taxi Associations and Rank managers to respond positively to the enquiry.

We call upon the SAPS and Metro Police to declare Noord Street a hot spot and therefore to provide police contact point in this area and a 24 hour visible patrol. To many who are dependants on public transport to commute in particular from Noord street to do so with in fear.

The rights of women are protected by constitution and the bill of rights of South Africa and all institutions and agencies should provide the necessary protection.

The Women’s League is in the process of engaging leaders of the taxi associations, Department of Safety and Security, Transport and the City of Johannesburg.

These barbaric actions must come to an end. We call all on respecting and real men to give support, respect, Love and care to their fellow Women and girls.
