The African National Congress Women’ League in unison with our fellow patriots applauds the honour conferred on our country by member states of the United Nations who overwhelmingly voted South Africa into the United Nations Security Council as a Non – permanent member with 186 votes out of 192 member states.
“To us as the progressive women of South Africa, this is a prestigious honor by the African nations who endorsed South Africa’s candidature and the world at large” said ANC Women’s League, President, Nosiviwe Mapisa – Nqakula. It is indeed a befitting testimony and tribute to the gallant heroines and heroes of an age gone by, who fearlessly fought for a just and humane society, especially that noble son Oliver Tambo amongst others. This indeed should marshal us to intensify the struggle against injustice in pursuit of peace and stability in the world”.
The ANC Women’s League thus pays tribute to the President of our Republic, Thabo Mbeki for his sterling stewardship of our country in the service of not only South Africa, but of humanity at large. “We hope that through this honor guns will be silenced on the African continent and in many parts of the world where women and children still bear the devastating impact of conflicts specially in the Middle East. To our sister and compatriot in the struggle for a peaceful world, we say “ Halala Nkosazana, you have made us proud”
Finally, the ANC Women’s League commits itself to work hand in hand with our government, women on the African continent and at large to ensure that the values enshrined in the United Nations Charter become a living reality for all the ordinary peoples of the world.
