Press Statement of the ANCWL on recent public spats

18 October 2006

The ANCWL recalls the Ekurhuleni Declaration of 2004 , which recognizes and acknowledges that member organisations of the alliance will from time to time have differences of opinion on policy and other matters and agreed that such differences should not be interpreted as divisions within the alliance.

Where such differences arise the alliance should strive to reach consensus in pursuance of its strategic objectives.

The ANCWL further more recalls that the alliance has established mechanisms for consultation and management of differences.

At its recent meeting held on the 16th of October 2006 the ANCWL National working committee reflected on the recent public spat within the alliance and noted with grave concern the failure and/ or neglect to use the existing mechanisms for consultation and management of differences, as all ANC members have the right to express their views within the structures of the organisation.

The ANCWL condemns in the strongest terms the Young Communist League for hurling insults at the President of the ANC Cde Thabo Mbeki. It is the ANCWL's view that such actions have a potential of eroding both the integrity and dignity of both the office of President of the ANC and that of the Republic of South Africa.

We urge that all members and leaders of the alliance should refrain from further public spats and resort to the agreed internal mechanisms for the management and resolution of differences in the alliance.
