Issued by the ANC Women's League in KwaZulu Natal.
17 March 2006
The African National Congress Women's League in KwaZulu-Natal welcomes the guilty verdict and a fine imposed on the news editor at the Independent Newspapers Mr Eric Ndiyane after being found guilty of sexual harassment by the Durban Equality Court.
Mr Ndiyane was found guilty on Friday, 10 March 2006 by the equality court after hearing a complaint brought by a former trainee-journalist at the Independent Newspapers.
As the ANC Women's League, we welcome the court verdict and the fine imposed on Mr Ndiyane. We further condemn his behaviour and actions. We congratulate the young woman for standing up for her rights. We hope her courageous stand will give hope to other women facing similar situations in our society.
The abuse of women and children has no place in our society and as the ANCWL we will always support initiatives aimed and ending the abuse of women and children.
We also call upon the Independent Newspapers Group to act against Mr Ndiyane as he has clearly brought the name of the group and the profession of journalism into disrepute with his actions.
