The African National Congress Women's League, together with various women from progressive community, will be launching a Progressive Women's Movement Steering Committee (PWM) tomorrow, Wednesday 8 March 2006.
This is part of the Women's League Conference resolution to ensure a stronger and coherent participation of women in all developmental platforms provided for by the ANC-led government.
Whereas a lot of progress has been made to put issues of women development on the forefront of the developmental agenda, the Women's League has acknowledged that women structures operate in isolation from each other.
Progressive Women's Movement is a non-governmental organisation that seeks to ensure that all progressive women structures and individuals have a platform throughwhich they can develop a comprehensive strategy to deal socio-economic challenges facing women of this country.
This is informed by lessons drawn worldwide that when diverse women work together in unity, a faster progress is made.
Some of those lessons include the 1956 Women's Chatter and the march to Union Buildings against pass laws imposed by the apartheid regime.
The formation of Women's Coalition after the unbanning of liberation organisations also proved that different women working together are stronger than same women working in isolation from others.
Tomorrow, Wednesday 8 March 2006, at Hilton Hotel, Sandton, Gauteng, women will converge to elect a non-partisan PWM Steering Committee.
The role of the steering committee would be to ensure the launch of the PWM scheduled to take place in August this year. Part of what the tomorrow's gathering would also do is the discussions around and the adoption of the position paper on the PWM.
Ministers, women in business, professional women, Faith Based Organisations and general civil orientated women's organisations will attend.
