ANC WOMEN'S LEAGUE

"On December 16, 1980, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution inviting women's organisations to proclaim an International Day of Solidarity with the Struggle of Women of South Africa (resolution 35/206N). The Special Committee, after consultations with a number of organizations, decided to proclaim the international day on the anniversary of the great women's march on Pretoria on August 9, 1954, in protest against the extension of passes to women. On December 17, 1981, on the recommendation of the Special Committee, the General Assembly invited all governments and organizations to observe the international day (resolution 36/172K).

"The Special Committee held special meetings on the international day annually from 1981, and invited representatives of the liberation movements as well as women's leaders from other countries. The following are some of the speeches of the leaders of the ANC Women's League at the meetings of the Special Committee on the international day."

YOUTH

"On November 9, 1976, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 16 June (the anniversary of the Soweto uprising) as the International Day of Solidarity with the Struggling People of South Africa (resolution 31/6I). The Special Committee against Apartheid held special meetings on that day and invited the liberation movements to make statements. The following are some of the statements of the ANC representatives, mostly from the youth league, at these special meetings."
