CHAIRMAN OF COMMITTEE AGAINST APARTHEID ENDORSES FUND APPEAL ON BEHALF OF SCHOOLS FOR SOUTH AFRICAN REFUGEES

A/AP/861, 9 June 1978

The following statement was issued today by the Chairman of the Special Committee against Apartheid, Leslie O. Harriman (Nigeria):

The Special Committee against Apartheid is most concerned about the urgent need for educational and other assistance to student refugees from South Africa who have fled from racist terror in the country. It considers that the United Nations and the international community have an obligation to provide all necessary assistance for their further education.

The Committee is considering plans of the national liberation movement of South Africa for the establishment of educational institutions and facilities for the student refugees, with a view to promoting contributions for the projects.

Meanwhile, the Committee has noted with satisfaction that the "South African Freedom Committee" is organizing a concert in New York on 16 June, Soweto Day, to raise funds for the building of schools for South African refugees. I hope that all delegations and other persons associated with the United Nations, as well as the public in general, will support this effort.
