GA/AP/844, 21 April 1978
Following is the text of a statement issued today by the Chairman of the Special Committee against Apartheid, Leslie O. Harriman (Nigeria):
Magubane's South Africa-published today by Alfred A. Knopf, New York-is a most timely publication during this International Anti-Apartheid Year.
It is a pictorial account of the past two decades in South Africa from an outstanding African photographer. It depicts truthfully the life, the struggle and the aspirations of the great majority of the people of that country and is, therefore, a powerful indictment of the hateful system of oppression which goes by the name of apartheid.
Mr. Magubane has suffered several years in detention and restriction, and innumerable arrests and beatings, for taking these photographs. All those who value human rights and human dignity are indebted to him for his courage and persistence.
I hope that this book will be widely circulated and studied.
