GA/AP/842, 14 April 1978
The Chairman of the Special Committee against Apartheid, Leslie O. Harriman (Nigeria) today issued the following statement:
I have been informed that over 200 students are now participating in a sit-in in the Administration Building of Princeton University in support of their request to the University to divest itself of stocks held in companies which do business in southern African countries under racist regimes or which have subsidiaries there. They have also called on the University to end all official ties with those countries.
I must commend the students for their action which is in harmony with the resolutions of the United Nations and the appeals of the oppressed peoples of southern Africa and their national liberation movements.
Apartheid and racism are the greatest moral and political challenges to the world today and it is most appropriate, during this International Anti-Apartheid Year, that universities and other institutions should face the challenge and lead public opinion.
I extend greetings, on behalf of the Special Committee against Apartheid, to the People's Front for the Liberation of Southern Africa at Princeton University. I would earnestly hope that Princeton University will take bold and unequivocal action to divest itself of all direct and indirect involvement in apartheid and set an example for other institutions.
