GA/AP/838, 4 April 1978
Following is the text of a statement issued today by the Chairman of the Special Committee against Apartheid, Leslie O. Harriman (Nigeria):
I have been informed that the Revenue and Taxation Committee of the State Assembly of California has recommended legislation to prohibit deduction by companies from California tax liability of costs incurred in operation in countries which have legally adopted and enforced policies of segregation and political and economic discrimination against specified racial groups.
This is an important initiative in harmony with the resolutions of the United Nations, especially during the International Anti-Apartheid Year. It is a measure which will be greatly appreciated by the oppressed people of South Africa and all opponents of racism.
I extend my congratulations to the sponsor of the bill, Assemblyman Willie Brown, and all its supporters. I hope that the bill will be enacted in the near future, and that the example will be followed by other legislatures.
