GA/AP/832, 22 March 1978
The Chairman of the Special Committee against Apartheid, Leslie O. Harriman (Nigeria), has today sent the following message to the Continuation Committee of the World Conference against Apartheid, Racism and Colonialism in Southern Africa (Lisbon, June 1977), meeting in London on 22-23 March:
I am happy to learn that the Continuation Committee will devote special attention to plans for International Anti-Apartheid Year.
International Year represents commitment by Governments and peoples and opportunity to greatly expand solidarity with the South African national liberation movement in its legitimate struggle to eradicate apartheid and enable South African people to exercise self-determination. I trust that the Continuation Committee will consider effective and concrete action by all its members in the light of the programme adopted by the United Nations General Assembly and in consultation with the South African national liberation movement.
I wish particularly to emphasize the importance of assistance to representatives of the liberation movement to acquaint peoples of all countries with their struggle and their needs for international assistance. The International Year should also be the occasion for the greatly increased political and material assistance to the oppressed people of South Africa and their national liberation movement.
The Special Committee looks forward to close co-operation with the Continuation Committee in observance of the International Year and in further action in support of the liberation of South Africa.
