APARTHEID COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN COMMENDS SOUTH AMERICAN TENNIS ASSOCIATION ON INITIATIVES TO EXCLUDE SOUTH AFRICA FROM DAVIS CUP ZONE

GA/AP/788, 31 January 1978

The following statement was issued today by the Chairman of the Special Committee against Apartheid, Leslie O. Harriman (Nigeria):

I have been informed by the Brazilian Government that Gabriel Carlos de Figueiredo, Chairman of the Brazilian Tennis Association and of the South American Tennis Association, has requested the Organization of the Davis Cup, in the name of the member countries of the South American Tennis Association, to exclude South Africa from the American Section of the Davis Cup Tennis Tournament.

On behalf of the Special Committee, I wish to commend members of the South American Tennis Association for their decision which is in accordance with the Olympic principle and the United Nations Declaration against Apartheid in Sport. They have thereby reaffirmed their opposition to racism and their solidarity with the oppressed people of South Africa.
