APARTHEID COMMITTEE HOPES SECURITY COUNCIL WILL MEET URGENTLY ON 'DETERIORATING SITUATION IN SOUTH AFRICA'

GA/AP/782, 12 January 1978

COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED TO THAT EFFECT

The Special Committee against Apartheid, following its meeting this morning, issued a communiqué in which it expressed hope that the Security Council would "meet urgently to consider the deteriorating situation in South Africa and decide on further effective measures to secure the implementation of its resolution 417".

The text of the communiqué is as follows:

"The Special Committee against Apartheid has noted with the gravest concern and indignation the continuing massacres of peaceful demonstrators in South Africa, the murders of political detainees and the trials of numerous patriots under the obnoxious racist repressive laws which provide for the death penalty.

"The Special Committee considers that the policies and actions of the apartheid regime have further aggravated the situation in South Africa. They are a challenge to the Security Council which in resolution 417 (1977) unanimously demanded an end to repression in South Africa.

"The Special Committee appeals to all Governments and organizations to step up action against the apartheid regime. It hopes that the Security Council will meet urgently to consider the deteriorating situation in South Africa and decide on further effective measures to secure the implementation of its resolution 417."
