An international campaign against apartheid, carried out under United Nations auspices, was given further impetus this month with the visit ot the Special Committee on the Policies of Apartheid of the Government of the Republic of South Africa to Stockholm, London and Geneva. This campaign, first proposed by the Special Committee in 1966 and endorsed by the General Assembly -- its parent body -- later that year comprises a many-sided effort of political action, humanitarian measures and information activity. This effort is designed to inform public opinion of the dangers of the South African policies of apartheid, assist the victims of those policies and eliminate apartheid. The eleven-member UN Special Committee on the Policies ot Apartheid held three meetings in the Swedish Parliament building on 17, 18, 19 June and heard representatives of organizations opposed to apartheid. The situation in South Africa was discussed as well as measures to secure the support of world public opinion for the international campaign against apartheid |
