The ANC is a national liberation movement. It was formed in 1912 to unite the African people and spearhead the struggle for fundamental political, social and economic change.
The ANC's key objective is the creation of a united, non-racial, non-sexist and democratic society.
This means the liberation of Africans in particular and black people in general from political and economic bondage. It means uplifting the quality of life of all South Africans, especially the poor.
The ANC is in an alliance with the South African Communist Party (SACP) and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU). Each Alliance partner is an independent organisation with its own constitution, membership and programmes. The Alliance is founded on a common commitment to the objectives of the National Democratic Revolution, and the need to unite the largest possible cross-section of South Africans behind these objectives.

The African National Congress wishes Dr Zwelini Mkhize a happy birthday today on the occasion of his 57th birthday. Dr. Mkhize who is a medical doctor by profession and who is also the Treasurer General of the ANC has dedicated the better time of his life at the service of the people of South Africa and ANC.
As he celebrates his birthday we cannot help but acknowledge that he has never lived a normal life as he was subjected to harassment by the erstwhile apartheid government which led to him being exiled. As a professional he dedicated his life to finding solutions in our health system which found expression in his involvement in the creation of the National Health Forum.
As a leader of ANC in the province, Dr. Mkhize played a crucial role in the peace efforts in KwaZulu-Natal during the period of the internecine violence in the province. His rise to lead the province of KZN as the Chairperson and Premier was the acknowledgment of his leadership after he had served as the MEC for Health and later as MEC for Finance.
His outstanding leadership qualities did not escape the attention of the membership and branches of the ANC during our national conference in Mangaung. He was deservedly elected as the Treasurer General, a position we believe he will service with distinction.
We believe that he will continue to play an important role in laying the ground for the ANC to live another century. We say `Khula ukhokhobe Khabazela!`
