ANC statement on the SABC

7 April 2009

The role of a public broadcaster in informing the public by reporting effectively on developmental issues is critical in deepening South Africa's constitutional democracy. Lack of this, calls into question the quality of leadership at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) - particularly in the news department.

It is against this background that the African National Congress (ANC) is concerned about any instability at the SABC's highest leadership level.

The ANC has noted news of the imminent end of the contract of the SABC's Head of News Snuki Zikalala, said to come into effect on the 30 April 2009.

In the interest of reflecting on developmental challenges facing the country, we urge the SABC board to find a suitable candidate to replace Mr Zikalala. We hope that the board will seriously head hunt for a person with a clear vision to develop a news team that understands development journalism.
