'Unity of African continent at the core of SA Foreing Policy' - Zuma tells Diplomats11 March 2009 Unity of the African continent - both politically and economically - will remain the ruling African National Congress's (ANC) major foreign policy thrust, according to ANC President Jacob Zuma. Addressing foreign diplomats in Tshwane yesterday (Wednesday,) Zuma said the ANC aimed to strengthen the country's role in peace, reconstruction, development and integration, "especially in Southern Africa and the African continent". "We must emphasise what our icon, former President Nelson Mandela said in 1992 that the primary task of the ANC's international policy was to be a friend to every nation in the world," said Zuma. Zuma: "We will therefore continue to explore and deepen our multilateral and bilateral relationships globally. The message we want to send out to the world is that our country is in motion towards an even better life. Our democratic institutions remain strong and effective. "We have a clear plan of how to fight poverty, crime and other social ills in the world. We seek the partnership of the international community as we work to achieve our goals. We will therefore be strengthening our economic relations on both a South-South and North-South level." The ANC Government sought to strengthen its role in the multilateral arena, "to work together with the South, for a more equitable distribution of power". There was "a positive climate in the world and a surge towards constructive dialogue," something the ANC would "take advantage of". Added Zuma: "Domestically, we expect a very smooth transition from the current administration to the next one. As the ANC we are working to get a huge majority, and to immediately hit the ground running to institute the changes we mention in the Manifesto, to improve service delivery. "We trust that we will continue working with you, to do more to make the world a much better place for all our children and future generations".
