RELEASE OF ANC CANDIDATES LISTS3 March 2009 The African National Congress has released its lists of candidates for the 2009 national and provincial elections. These lists were submitted to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on Monday 2 March. The list of candidates for the National Assembly is in two parts: the national-to-national list (200 candidates), and the provincial-to-national lists (200 candidates). The second set of lists is of candidates for the nine provincial legislatures. The number of candidates in each provinces is determined by the number of seats in each legislature. The ANC is fielding candidates for all seats in the National Assembly and nine provincial legislatures. In putting together these lists, the ANC has emphasised inclusivity and representivity. The ANC continues to play a leading role in the struggle to achieve gender equality across society. We have therefore ensured that at least half of all candidates are women. After it finalised the lists last week, the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) said: "Following an extensive democratic process that began several months ago in ANC branches, the ANC has chosen a corps of cadres who have the experience, resolve and credibility to serve the South African people capably and with diligence. "Over the next few weeks, these candidates will spread out across the country to introduce themselves to voters, to engage with them on their concerns and needs, and to popularise the ANC's election manifesto. "The ANC has sent a clear message to all its candidates that, should they be elected, their function is to serve the people, selflessly and to the best of their ability. They have been told that their organisation, and the people they represent, will hold them to the highest standards of integrity and accountability."
