Candidates that will work together with all South Africans

25 February 2009

The African National Congress has today finalised its list of candidates for parliament and the provincial legislatures, selecting a group of candidates that will be able to work together with all South Africans to build a better future.

In putting together these lists, the ANC has emphasised inclusivity and representivity.

Following an extensive democratic process that began several months ago in ANC branches, the ANC has chosen a corps of cadres who have the experience, resolve and credibility to serve the South African people capably and with diligence.

The nominations process began at branch general meetings last year, where ANC members got an opportunity to review the performance of sitting public representatives, and put forward the names of people they thought would be able to make a positive contribution.

These nominations were forwarded to provincial list conferences where branch delegates developed a collective view on the lists. These were further refined at a national list conference last month.

The ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) met today to finalise the nine lists for the provincial legislatures and the ten lists for the National Assembly. The ANC will submit the details of its candidates to the Independent Electoral Commission by the deadline of Monday, 2 March 2009.

For the success of this process, the NEC would like to express its deep appreciation to the ANC's branches and provinces, the leagues and our Alliance partners.

The National List Committee - in line with the ANC's list guidelines - has worked hard to consolidate the list of candidates.

In building democratic institutions that are accountable and responsive, the ANC has placed much emphasis on selecting candidates that have a track record of involvement in communities, who are familiar with consultative processes, and who are able to forge partnerships in implementation.

The ANC continues to play a leading role in the struggle to achieve gender equality across society. We have therefore ensured that at least half of all candidates are women. There is an equal mix of men and women throughout the lists.

We have also made a serious effort to ensure representation of people with disabilities in parliament and in provincial legislatures. We have also achieved a fair age spread. As is evident from the lists, we have also retained a great deal of experience, while ensuring a healthy infusion of new blood.

Over the next few weeks, these candidates will spread out across the country to introduce themselves to voters, to engage with them on their concerns and needs, and to popularise the ANC's election manifesto.

The ANC has sent a clear message to all its candidates that, should they be elected, their function is to serve the people, selflessly and to the best of their ability. They have been told that their organisation, and the people they represent, will hold them to the highest standards of integrity and accountability.

[Please find below the top 100 names on the national list for the National Assembly. The rest of the names on the national-to-national list, together with the provincial lists, will be made available online within the next day.]
