ANC statement on Voting Abroad Ruling

10 February 2009

The African National Congress (ANC) has noted the ruling of the Pretoria High Court yesterday (9 February 2009) that registered voters living abroad should be allowed to vote.

The ANC’s long-standing view is that it is preferable that all South Africans, including those temporarily abroad, have an opportunity to cast their votes in elections.

This, however, should be subject to the availability of resources and logistical considerations. Voters who voluntarily choose to be away from the country on voting day should appreciate that there may be practical limits to what the electoral commission can do.

The ANC is concerned by suggestions that the date of the election be postponed. The rights of millions of South Africans who are ready to go to the polls should be respected.

The ANC hopes that this matter be speedily finalised by the Constitutional Court so that certainty is obtained.
