Nomination of Premiers guided by the Polokwane Resolutions

24 April 2009

The African National Congress (ANC) wishes to clarify the process regarding the nomination of ANC Premier candidates.

The process to nominate Premiers is guided by the resolutions of the 52nd National Conference of the ANC held in Polokwane in 2007. The relevant resolution directs that the ANC Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) should compile a list of three names in order of preference. The list is then submitted to the National Executive Committee (NEC) to deliberate on the names and make a decision.

Since the National Conference in Polokwane, this resolution has been followed to appoint Premiers. This process will be finalised before the first sitting of provincial legislatures scheduled for 6 May 2009.

Every effort will be made to ensure this process is conducted as expeditiously as possible. An announcement of the outcomes will be made in due course.
