ANC satisfied that voting is running smoothly

The African National Congress (ANC) is satisfied that the 2009 election was, by noon, running smoothly. Since voting stations opened this morning, few glitches have been reported by our party agents.

Most stations opened on time and had the voting materials required. Technical and administrative problems were reported in less than 1% of stations.

We have not received any reports of political violence or intimidation. In the handful of instances where irregularities have been alleged, the IEC has acted swiftly and decisively.

This augurs well for free, fair and peaceful elections.

A number of ANC leaders have already cast their votes. ANC President Jacob Zuma voted in Nkandla, shortly after former President Nelson Mandela voted in Houghton Johannesburg. ANC Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe and Secretary General Gwede Mantashe both voted early in the morning.

We continue to monitor the situation throughout the country as other leaders cast their votes and visit voting stations. We are confident that the atmosphere of peace and jubilation will persist throughout the day.

The ANC calls on all voters who have not cast their votes to make their way to the voting stations before they close at 21h00. It is important that these elections are a true reflection of the aspirations of as many South Africans.

We also reiterate our call to retailers and farmers who are operating today to provide their employees time off for them to be able to cast their votes.
