Dear Mr.President, happy birthday! I have never written to you befor, but I always pray for YOU: After the first democratic election, held in South Africa, I sent a letter to Your former Ambassador in Rome to tell him my happiness, and he inted me.I was very glad to meet him. I am from Ivory Coast, but really I don't care about the country where I was born: I am an AFRICAN. I know that we have many problems in Africa, especially social and economic problems. Thanks to God, we have Madiba! We hope you are going to live for long again, because Africa need you. As an African, the greatest thing I can hope is to meet, one day, the greatest person still alive: NELSON MANDELA. May God bess, Dr.Emmanuel Zagbla Padova,Italy.

Dear Mr President Mandela! I am a secondary school teacher in Norway who had the chance to visit your country in 1995, through a Norwegian NGO (Norwegian Church Aid) and a South African NGO (Spiritual Churches¥ Research and Theological Training Institute). I later based my Master Degree in Education and Development studies at the University of Bristol on the future role of NGOs in the development of a democratic South Africa. Dear Mr President, I admire your strong and vital role in the development of your country. You have spent nearly thirty years in prison because of the unfair apartheid system, and the first thing you talk about after being released is peace and reconciliation. Only a strong leader can be able to do such a thing. I wish you a happy birthday and a peaceful future in the service for your new democracy! Best wishes Trond Pedersen

Dear Madiba!!! We wish you all the best from the bottom of our hearts and we really hope you will have many more years to enjoy your life and your new love, to spend time with your children and grandchildren and to see South Africa becoming the shining example to the whole world !!!!!! Now please let us give vent to our feelings: Have we ever told you that - South Africa is the best place on earth - You are the best president - Your people are the best people on earth - We love to smile at the people since we always get a smile back - We love to talk and to listen to the people since we always learn a lot - We found a lot of friends during our three visits - We always feel a strong power inside when being in South Africa - We always feel at home when walking on South African soil again - We feel a deep love for the country and its people - We feel an eating up yearning when not being in South Africa - We love Shereen Habib with whom we made a 'Bo-Kaap'- and a 'Township' tour in Cape Town - We like Biltong - We like Mealie - We like South African beer, especially Castle - We like Marula beer, but you have to take care because it makes you drunken very fast - We like the tropic fruits liquorice from 'Beacon', try it and you will love it, too. - We tried to make sour milk as you described in your book 'Long walk to Freedom' but something went wrong since it had not become thick - We would like to learn Zulu and Afrikaans to have a better chance understanding the people - We have tried again and again to make 'Clicks' which is very very difficult, but sometimes our tongue is doing right and then it sounds so nice. But to sing the 'Click song' like Miriam Makeba will take a long long time......... - We danced with the women at Mkhaya Nature Reserve in Swaziland - uuuh that was great fun - You are a good dancer - We love 'Ladysmith Black Mambazo' - We love 'Brenda Fassie' - We love 'Sarafina' - We love the Township Jive - We had an interesting conversation about South Africa with the owner of the small restaurant 'Little Bombay', Main Street, Sea Point in Cape Town. Whenever you should have the opportunity you should go there, the food is so delicious and the atmosphere is very pleasant. - We never before saw a more amazing night sky than during the full moon nights in Kruger Park - We met an impressing man - employee - at Timbavati spot - Kruger Park - who was very strong in his belief and with whom we prayed together - We asked a tourist information officer in Sabie about you and she was very enthusiastic in telling us that they are all so proud of you and that they all believe in you - We know we can learn a lot from all the different cultures resp. ways of life in South Africa - We like you wearing these nice colourful African shirts - You are a good-looking man - We never felt like this before when we saw you this year in February at the Houses of Parliament in Cape Town when you gave a speech to the nation to do more on their own - what a pity that we could not go in - We learnt a lot at Mayibuye Centre at the University of Western Cape - We had a great view of Cape Town at night from Signal Hill - We had a great evening at 'Mama Africa', Long Street, Cape Town with a very tasty impala stew, very nice cocktails - the best was the 'African Dream' - and in the end very good African live music which made us dancing. When you go there do it on Fridays so you can also hear live music! - We heard a nice comment on a special part of Iris' body - she was wearing a nice orange ethnic dress - from a friendly young man emphasizing this with a certain gesture: Oh, what a nice backside - We enjoyed listening to the stories about Zulu culture - especially those about how a man is looking for a woman - told by an elder Zulu woman - We like traditionally brewed beer - We love sweet potatoes - We love butternuts - We love koeksisters with grape jam - We tasted our first crayfish which is really delicious but could not at all enjoy it since they are boiled alive. Huuh, what a feeling must that be... - We had an encouraging conversation with a member of parliament - an elder man - in the early morning at the jetty of Lambert's Bay - We cried when listening to the stories of Noor Ebrahim who works in the District Six Museum - We could not stop crying during a theatre performance of a non-professional group telling their stories during apartheid - Iris embraced one member of the group, an elder woman, after the performance telling her that she loves her and she smiled, also embraced Iris and also told her that she loves her - those are the best moments in life giving you a lot of energy and hope! - Iris enjoyed reading the book 'Goodbye Bafana' by James Gregory - Bernd enjoyed reading the book 'Side by Side' by Helen Josef - We enjoyed reading your book 'Long walk to Freedom' - We feel very good when looking over the green gentle hills of former Transkei with the lovely, colourfully painted houses - We like Johannesburg with its special atmosphere of changes and movements - We like the Northern Transvaal because it is not so developped and pleasantly unspoilt - We enjoyed our stay in Nwanedi Resort far in the north since we also had a nice conversation with the two waiters in the restaurant - we were the only guests that evening - and they played very nice African music for us - We always buy too many books and videos in South Africa so that we have monkey-like arms when flying back - We love the elephants - We love the suricates since they are so cute and live very social - We love the leguaans - Iris likes the hyenas which is strange for Bernd - We love the kudus with their large ears - We love the impalas with their wonderful eyes and beautiful bodies - We like Soweto with its very pleasant atmosphere - We love Abraham from 'Jimmy's face to face tours', the guide on our Soweto tour - You have beautiful daughters - We are fascinated by your speeches - You are a charming man - We like the delicious fruits in South Africa like lychees, mangos and avocados - We like your warm smile - We like the numbers on the squatters in Crossroads meaning that these people will soon get a house - We like the coffee shops in the morning for having a good strong coffee and something nice to eat - We love the guard at the entrance gate of Addo's wilderness area since he always has a friendly smile on his face - We admire the bushmen who unfortunately cannot go on living their traditional way of life - We like the open air restaurants on the West Coast where you can have the best grilled fish and an unbelievable atmosphere - We had great fun when looking at the bruises on our right arms after driving on the left side of the road for the first time in our lifes - We had great luck when seeing a female leopard together with her cub eating their prey - We love our dearest friend Sara Mmako who is a beautiful and nice young woman working at the Aventura Resort at Loskop Dam - We love her friend Thulani who is a good-looking and hard working man - We were deeply impressed about the great variety of landscapes, cultures, religions, beliefs and people in South Africa, it is indeed one world in one country WE MUST NOT GO SOMEWHERE ELSE WE HAVE ALL IN OUR BELOVED SOUTH AFRICA We hope very much that you will enjoy reading these words!!!! Take care of you and your family!!!!! Nkosi sikelel' iAfrika Maluphakanyisw' uphondo lwayo, Yizwa imithandazo yethu, Nkosi sikelela, thina lusapho lwayo. Morena boloka setjhaba sa heso, O fedise dintwa la matshwenyeho, O se boloke, O se boloke setjhaba sa heso, Setjhaba sa South Afrika - South Afrika. Uit die blou van onse hemel, Uit die diepte van ons see, Oor ons ewige gebergtes, Waar die kranse antwoord gee, Sounds the call to come together, And united we shall stand, Let us live and strive for freedom, In South Africa our land. THANK YOU President Mandela for your courage and faith that had made your country and example to the world and a model for the future. I was in your beautifully country Dec 97 and Jan 98. I meet many of your wonderful people of all colors and tribes. I got an opportunity to learn about your African Praise Poems and I wish I could make one for you on your birthday, maybe I will be able to do so on your next birthday. I do have a poem that I wrote after my visit to South Africa. *** Reconciliation *** My dreams would begin beautifully in Africa, and culminate with a robbed cradle entering the Americas into the monstrous nightmare of slavery played over and over. I found no peace in this darkness, and no ability to move forward pass these atrocities that held my daybreak at arrest. I went to South Africa, a healing nation, where truth and reconciliation were on hearts and tongues like cool clear waters coming from an oasis where Hope lives. I petitioned God in this sacred place for new spirit and sight, And God's voice came and my ears were overwhelmed and my knees were disjoined from legs so that I fell to the ground shaken. I heard Forgiveness sing from the symphony of the Middle Passage, unsung nameless souls in the song of songs to the king of kings and then I heard my voice sing this song I never heard before but I knew the words and I sang in accord with all gathered. I could not move. I could not move until everything and everyone was forgiven.

Dear Mr.President, Long life, health and happiness ! I heard the news of your decision to retire with a feeling of loss and sadness. You have brought enlightenment, humanity and laughter to the world. It is selfish and I know it is wrong to feel this way. You taught us to have faith in the human race itself. And yet you are in a unique position to direct positive change in the arena of world politics. Mr. President, I hope you enjoy the beautiful country of your childhood and your fine family in your retirement. But, as you said, the struggle is your life. Earlier this year you said goodbye to various international institutions. I hope that you will reconsider and become one of the voices for progress, justice and freedom in the world. There is a greater family - and it still needs you. This is the time when the cause of freedom can be universally realised. This cause is the defining struggle of humanity, throughout all history, The struggle never ends. The as yet protean ethics and philosophy of human rights and respect for our earth are slowly becoming universally enshrined in our law. At this time we can help create the new ethic and so help plot the course of our destiny. We must recognise our kinship with all peoples. It is a scientific, genetical fact, there is only one human race. The family is the most universal and the deepest relationship in humanity. If one lives with the truth of our family relationship then the whole of one's interactions in society are transformed - in one's neighbourhood, one's country and in one's world. At the heart of this reconciliation we must nurture a deep respect for our religious and cultural differences. More than that we must protect, nourish and celebrate them. In the end the one thing that unites the human race may be the appreciation of our diversity. Finally, we must accept our relationship with the world. We are all children of the earth. We must make common cause against the global problems that threaten to end our human cultural heritage, our world civilisation and our human race itself. A family is strongest in times of crisis. With these common principles to guide us and with the common ideals of democracy and human rights to strengthen us we can begin to look in more detail at the practical actions necessary to realise them. 1. The terrible suffering of the poor and starving billions must be relieved. This is an important pre-requisite for peace, stability and prosperity for all of us. People who can meet their basic needs can make a positive contribution to world society. One day these same starving billions may provide knowledge and wisdom vital to our survival. In countries and economic blocs that currently heavily subsidise their agriculture there should be a gradual change to a more rational form of government support. Rather than subsidise farmers, state funding should be put into buying agricultural produce such as cereals and seeds which will relieve the plight of people in famine areas. In this way farmers will be rewarded for production rather than for non-production. Whilst high yields will mean higher profits an emphasis on organic, environmentally responsible farms will ensure a move to more sustainable methods of farming in the entire agricultural sector. These new techniques will be instrumental in brokering deals and projects between farmers in the developing world and the West that will profit both sides. The state will find itself less and less economically burdened with massive spending on agriculture as these joint ventures gradually move into profit. There will be no increase in government subsidies, the entire world agricultural sector will experience a boom greater in scope than the Agricultural Revolution and new, ecological methods of food production will be smoothly phased in. The international community should institute a World Emergency Aid Store. This would consist of grain stores, clothing, medicines and fuel stored in locations on every continent to be made available to all nations in times of need, such as failed harvests and ecological disasters. All nations will contribute to it. The armed forces are best trained and equipped to deliver this aid wherever it is required. International task forces sanctioned by the United Nations to provide humanitarian aid and protection with medical personnel, fire fighters, engineers and environmental experts would be vital support for emergency services in disaster areas within developed and developing nations alike. They would also provide a very real symbol of the war we are engaged in. Having provided for emergency relief, the resources for aid and the means of organising and distributing it, we can now turn our attention to development. Development is also vital for peace, stability and prosperity in the world. There is a saying in Africa, An empty stomach knows no law. The Debt Crisis is a formidable obstacle in the continuing attempts at economic development in the Southern hemisphere and yet like all problems it contains within it the seeds of its own solution. All debts will be frozen at their present levels. The initial investment will be returned to the donor - with the undertaking that these funds are to be used in investments in infrastructure projects within the debtor nation. The interest on the debts will be returned to the country of origin - with the undertaking that these funds be used for health care and education projects. The financial institutions would make huge returns on their investments. Initial investments which they had largely accepted as lost to them would be returned to them many times over. In this way, water, sanitation, electricity, building and housing projects along with transportation system schemes will spring up to provide the basic infrastructure necessary for further development. Favoured schemes will be ecologically responsible and on the local level, partnerships with local communities will be the deciding criterion. This basic infrastructure will be built by the people of the developing nation working together with Water and Energy Companies, multi-national Building Corporations and Transportation companies. Big business will find a rich seam of massive public demand, huge initial funding from creditor commercial institutions and a large and highly motivated local work force. Needless to say the economies of all participating nations will be boosted. In the initial stages of development, experts and advisers will be required from donor nations to provide co-ordination and training. Later as the local work-force is gradually trained by their employers and educated by the schools, colleges and universities built, equipped and staffed as a result of their own government's funding for massive education schemes, these people will require less and less assistance. As in all industrialised nations in the history of their development this work-force will form the key factor in that development. With the fair wages they are paid, they will be a large new market for further investment in all the needs of any industrialised nation. The potential for economic growth in both developing and developed nations is awesome. Soft industries, retail, service and financial industries aswell as consumer and cultural interests both foreign and domestic will move in at this stage. In this way full vertical development will take place within the developing nation itself. Multi-national companies will bring about the arrival and local growth of smaller supplier companies. The conditions of improved living standards, medical care, educational and work opportunities are the very same that brought about the stabilisation of population growth in the industrialised nations. Development has another major advantage for all the nations involved. Developing nations can learn from the costly mistakes that industrial nations made in their own development. By planning infrastructure development with the local environment, ecological balance and the views of local people as important factors in each local Feasibily Study, we can ensure that it will be successful, cost-efficient and permanent. Existing environmentally sustainable techniques and technologies will be given a boost in all industries involved. New ones will be developed in the field. In this way, developed nations will learn valuable new skills that will be needed to re-juvenate their own economies. The necessity of reviewing existing methods of energy management, urban infrastructure and building promises a new Industrial Revolution, one that will bring about another leap in technological, economic and social progress. 2. A necessary corollary of economic development is social and political progress. The two must proceed simultaneously. Economic development must have the conditions of political and social stability. Democracy must have and be seen to have an immediate economic benefit. For the first time in history, democracy, human rights and liberalised economic markets have become common ideals, shared by the vast majority of nations throughout the world. It is true that these ideals have been reluctantly put into practice in some cases. Corruption, nepotism and their implicit social exclusion have exacted huge economic and human costs. It is incumbent upon the free world to make the democratic option as easy as possible for all nations to take. Democratic nations tend to be less militarily aggressive and more favourably inclined towards constructive dialogue - this is the nature of democracy. A multi-party democracy gives people the opportunity to express their views politically rather than violently. Many instances of terrorism and civil war in unstable regions of the world will be quelled in this way. A fair and affordable legal system gives people the means to settle their differences peacefully. An open, egalitarian education system allows a society to pursue excellence in itself through its citizens. Adequate comprehensive health services are vital for economic development and the stability of population growth. With the opportunity to explore their potential and with employment that gives them the means to sustain their families and to save a little, people will create yet more wealth and jobs. Once again, the developed world can help in the transition to democracy. In the intial stages, it may be necessary to institute Truth and Reconciliation Committees similar in form and spirit to the South African T.R.C. The involvement of local religious and community leaders in this process will add to its authority. The Truth and Reconciliation Committe is an idea that has such power and potential that it must be taken up world-wide at both national and local levels. In certain nations the knowledge and experience of successful multi-cultural democracies such as the United States and South Africa will be needed to help heal ethnic divisions. In other cases young democracies with newly liberalised economies such as Russia will be needed to guide a nation through the transition. The European Union with its own various economic, social and political institutions is well equipped to provide co-ordination. Judicial, legislative, law-enforcement and educational professionals from developed and developing nations will be able to formulate standards and the means to achieve them within specific cultural contexts. The postee-experts will not only provide advice, training and guidance but will also learn from their host colleagues. Indeed all parties will learn together to plan and implement new more effective and representative institutions. To seek a more perfect Union or society is the mandate and duty imparted to us by our cultural and historical forebears. Once again the local model is most expedient and efficient both economically and socially. New ideas include electronic voting, direct democracy and local neighbourhood groups. If people were empowered and responsible for their own neighbourhoods then we would see an immediate improvement everywhere. 3. Global economics is the sphere of influence from which change can be directed towards a fairer and more stable world. Just as the European Economic Council became the European Union and the global computer stock exchange served as a prototype for the internet; so global economics will lead to a new world body of international co-operation. The international markets have all too often limited the options of democratically elected governments to enact policies for the benefit of their people. Even developed nations can experience the hardships of stock market crashes. Developing nations are the most vulnerable to social collapse as a result of economic collapse. In the sphere of the world economy, no single nation is wholly immune from the fluctuations of boom and bust. For this reason an Exchange Rate Mechanism between the three largest currencies - the U.S. Dollar, the Euro and the Yen would be a vital step towards a more stable world. These three national economies can act as the main balance. Most other currencies can stablilise themselves by fixing their currencies in relation to one or more of these. Ofcourse new powerful economic forces may come to join the Exchange Rate Mechanism with the three main currencies. Regional economic blocs or consortiums would help lead to a World Exhange Rate Mechanism. International Free Trade Agreements provide the opportunity to affect change in many important areas. In addition to human rights, the environment must be at the centre of all international accords. The ecological value of raw materials, finished products and even services must be incorporated into their economic value. This is rational. Raw materials have to be more expensive if they have been extracted without regard for the sustainability of that resource. A plentiful resource extracted with care to ensure future supplies has to be more economically viable than a less responsible alternative. Key commodities that have a huge bearing on all our lives should have their prices carefully controlled through international agreements between producers and buyers. The human aspect of these enterprises must be taken into account so that trade can benefit all parties. This is good and prudent business practice. Oil, natural gas, coal, metal ores, timber and even coffee, tea, sugar-cane and other food-stuffs would be included in this list of key commodities. Incorporated into the prices set for these resources should be their ecological value. This will lead to a stabilisation in prices that will benefit both the producer and the consumer. In the future this arrangement will lead to a more logical and responsible use of our natural resources that may stop us from totally depleting our reserves of copper ore for instance, and ensure that we find alternative synthetic and sustainable materials while there is still a choice. 4. The cause of protecting our environment has reached such a pitch of urgency and unanimity that it was one of the first instances of global negotiations. As part of a wider strategy it will be possible to agree limits and standards that would be benficial to both the developed and developing nations. The Earth Summits were an important first step towards an international search for a balance between the economic needs of our world civilisation and the natural environment upon which it depends. A multi-disciplined International Environmental Task-Force charged with finding sustainable approaches to energy use, air and water pollution, waste disposal and water and sanitation would help the process of international negotiations by setting economically viable standards. Environmental experts, economists and scientists working together with business leaders, industrialists, administrators, town-planners, environmental groups and community representatives would quickly find that a sustainable approach is the most viable both economically and socially. Their studies would be conducted at the national and local level in order to agree environmental standards for industrial and urban domestic processes. The task-force would set standards for the levels of carbon dioxide and other gases released into the atmosphere. Similar goals would be set for maximising the efficiency of energy, natural resources and water consumption; for minimising the amount of raw sewage and industrial pollutants released into rivers and seas, domestic and industrial waste production. In many instances minor modifications in existing systems will yield major improvements. The role of local citizens' groups would be as important in the long-term. The responsibilty of making the place where their families live healthier, safer, cleaner and more natural could galvanise a massive people's movement that would work with the environmental task-force to fulfill their obligations. Religious leaders would be instrumental in making this mass-movement deeply personal for all peoples. All of the main world religions profess a belief in the role of humanity as custodians or guardians of the earth. The sanctity of all creation and of our everyday lives is an aspect of our spiritual heritage that we must emphasise whatever our beliefs. For this reason, the reconciliation between all the faiths of the earth in this great cause should bring into their fold the diverse and rich cultures of the indigenous peoples. These people are harmed the most by the abuse of our natural inheritance. They first spoke out for us all in our courts of law, our chambers of government and in the great hall of the United Nations itself. 5. The unprecedented and accelerating technological advancements we make can and must be harnessed to help stabilise the world situation. The state of our environment is so critical that new technologies must be phased in to replace existing systems even after they have been optimised for efficiency. Our best efforts to stabilise population growth will still mean a doubling of our numbers. Most of these human beings will live in conditions that are unthinkable to their relations in the developed world. Science and technology may help provide the means to meet their needs. For the first time in our history we have a truly global community and culture made possible by the new infrastructures of the tele-communications revolution. This world community can help bring about the universal realisation of the freedoms and opportunities which we call human rights. An internationally sponsored Research and Development team reporting to the International Environmental Task-Force would co-ordinate local task-forces working with industry to find new synthetic alternatives to the unsustainable use of natural materials. Solar, wind and hydro-electric power stations on the local level and even on the family home level would easily out perform existing massive-scale systems and could be installed rapidly. Research and development of these technologies must be taken up by existing oil and energy companies working with the International Environmental Task-Force. In this way, these commercial interests can join the other new providers of alternative energy sources to make progress massively profitable. In the same way that oil and coal companies powered the twentieth century, so with new ideas and energy they will help fulfill the hopes our ancestors had for us. Bio-technological industries can revolutionise food-production. Crop yields can be increased, their resistance to pests and disease can be boosted - thus obviating the need for pesticides and other chemicals harmful to the environment. Food-stuffs can even be mass-produced in the laborotary, by-passing the need for agriculture itself. Water recycling, purification and de-salination processes need to be made more economically viable if the human race is to be. These technologies should also be investigated and made available where the need is the most urgent as part of the World Development Program. The co-ordination of all these task-forces - local, national and international and the unification of all these separate fronts in the war against our extinction will also require new technology. All the data gathered should be made available to the world via the internet. This will mean that new knowledge can be disseminated instantly, local efforts world-wide can be directed as a whole and also that the peoples of the world can see for themselves the work that is being done and the urgent need for it. It often forgotten that our institutions and systems of governance are also technologies; invented by our progenitors to serve us - the peoples. These technologies too, are subject to change and progress. It has been said that we have been given a fourth chance to achieve world peace. The many new international bodies of economic, security and political co-operation are a hopeful indication of the future. These exist in parallel with the United Nations and work with it in areas of shared jurisdiction. It is right and proper that nations should work together in separate ventures where there is a common area of interests. However, at present there is a great deal of over-lap in the geography and jurisdiction of these many bodies. The United Nations has been such a success that its authority must continue to be guaranteed. The United Nations acts as a safety-valve, it diffuses conflict. The U.N. keeps all nations at the table - even despotic regimes. This is important if the people of these nations are to be given the opportunity to choose freedom and democracy. However, most nations now share common ideals and goals and are working together as never before. It is logical that these many separate projects be brought together under one body of shared international authority. The World Alliance would enhance the efficiency, effectiveness and authority of decision making. It would give the system stability. It would provide a pool of resources and information that would be greater in scope than anything that could be achieved separately. But most of all, by working together the separate nations of the World Alliance could co-ordinate their vital efforts on a global scale for the first time in history - while enhancing their national sovereignty. The current network of international Conferences, multi-lateral Organisations and Trade Pacts would continue and develop as consortiums of shared interests and negotiating positions within the World Alliance. These would allow the system flexibility. A nation may become a member of several Consortiums, Trade Pacts and International Agreements that may change over time. This three-fold system of international co-operation would ensure that this time we take the opportunity for peace and progress and give meaning to the terrible sacrifices of our forebears. The growing feasibilty of commercial ventures in space are also worthy of investigation. The prospect of a random asteroid or comet destroying us after all of our efforts to balance ourselves is appalling but all too real. Space exploration has always accelerated technological development and this is set to increase. New mineral deposits may be mined in our solar system. Small working communities may spring up to extract these rich souces in the near future. Eventually these may help meet many of our material needs. All human systems require the possibility of growth in addition to stability. This is as true for the Global Market as it is for human beings themselves. After the struggle of making our world our own again we will need to reach out to new horizons. The logical approach is to work together now in this venture and to concentrate on workable, practical goals in progressive phases of development. One day - if we solve the seemingly intractable problems of our time - we may even settle on new worlds and journey among the stars themselves.

I have spent my entire teenage and adult life fighting Apartheid. And the only time I have ever felt that this is worth while has been when I have seen my president cavorting and jolling in the public eye. Many people will say that everything is going OK, but President Mandela, affirmative action is being misapplied. So many people are scared to say so, but let me give expression to this this..........

Sometimes when our kids (8 and 10 years old) have seen horrible things on television I tell them the story about Nelson Mandela and the fight for freedom and hope. Sometimes when we meet friends who are close to despair in their fight for human rights, for their dreams and their wishes, I tell them the story about a man who spent everyday for 27 years in hard work, in prison, preparing for the day of freedom for him and his people. You gave us hope, you still give us hope and in the future I know my children will find hope in thinking about Nelson Mandela and New South Africa. Democracy - they say - must be won everyday. You gave us so much. We wish you a wonderful birthday and good luck in the future struggle for democracy and for a proud free New South Africa. Eva Rundkvist with family.

Dear mr. President, all the best for your 80th birthday and a long and happy life! Congratulations for your achievements in the transformation of SA! I¥m only here since 7 month (originally from Germany) but I¥m going to stay! The only real problem of SA appears to be a strange lack of confidence, this obviously especially among the white citizens. I hope I can contribute to reversing that attitude with my example. I write on behalf of my organisation, the Barbados Youth Parlaiment (BYP) to wish you, President Mandela, a most enjoyable birthday with many more. It is with pleasure that I wish you, an icon for freedom all over the world a 80th birthday. In Barbados as young people conscious of politics here at home, the Caribbean and the world, we were very young, many in our teens when we first heard about South Africa and apartheid and most of all, the light of the struggle for change, Nelson Mandela. We are a few years older now but still the struggle is fresh in our minds for it can help remind us of slavery and the uprising of 1937 in July that saw black Barbadians fighting for their freedom and rights as a people. South Africa as nation and people have come a long way but still has many more miles to tarvel on the journey of healing and racial harmony. Mandela you are representative of freedom fighters everywhere, a symbol of hope where they may be none. We wish for the youth of South Africa, Barbados and the world to be connected as young people to share not only their common destiny but find solutions to the similar issues affecting us. It is thus by coming together irrespective of country that youth can take control of their destiny to be the leaders and future of the world. It is people like you, Mandela that have set the stage for us to follow in a line of equality and freedeom for all people of every race, class, colour, ethnic group or creed. Thanks for your light for without the world would be a dark place. Congratulations! Yours truly, Mr. Ronnie Yearwood Senior Member BARBADOS YOUTH PARLIAMENT
