BREAKING THE RULES CAN RESULT IN BAN FROM ELECTIONS Issued by: African National Congress Local government elections ELECTORAL CODE OF CONDUCT These rules apply to candidates, members, officials and supporters of political parties. Parties or candidates who break the rules can be banned from standing for election. DO! - Respect the right of all other parties and voters to disagree with you and to run election campaigns in your area. - Publicly condemn violence and intimidation - Work with officials and other parties for free and fair elections - Make sure all your supporters abide by the code of conduct - Make sure women participate fully in all parts of the election - Cooperate with any police investigations about election crime or fraud DO NOT! - Take down any other party's posters or banners - Disrupt meetings, events or canvassing of other parties - Allow members or suppur events - Spread lies or false rumours about parties or candidates - Use any form of violence or intimidation, including violent language and sexual harassment to force voters to support a party or candidate - Use bribery or abuse positions of power to get votes CODE OF CONDUCT FOR PARTIES AND CANDIDATES LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS All parties and candidates rgistered for the elections have to stick to the rules in the Electoral Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct also applies to office bearers, members and supporters of a party. If anyone from the ANC breaks the rules any voter, other party or official can make a case against us with the Election Tribunal. This is a special court that will quickly deal with election crimes. There will be an Elections Apeals Tribunal at provincial level that you can appeal to if you think a Tribunal gave an unfair judgement. If we are found guilty, we can lose the election because of the punishment that the Tribunal can order. Punishment Punishment for breaking the Code of Conduct can be any of the following: The ANC or a candidate can be banned from standing for election in the area. The ANC or a candidate can be banned from holding meetings or doing any canvassing in the election area. The ANC can be banned from appearing on television or radio or advertising in newspapers. Votes can be subtracted from the number of votes we get in the election. A fine of up to R100 000 or a jail sentence for the person involved.
