NEW LOCAL ELECTIONS BILL INCLUDES DISPUTED PROCLAMATIONS: CABINET PRETORIA Sept 27 Sapa The cabinet on Wednesday decided new legislation on the local government elections should include the controversial proclamations declared invalid by the Constitutional Court last week. Cabinet secretary Jakes Gerwel told a media briefing in Pretoria the Local Government Transition Amendment Bill would be put to parliament in October, in a special session. It would be reviewed by parliamentary standing committees on October 9 and 10 and put before the national assembly on October 11 and the senate on October 12. The National Party, which had threatened another Constitutional Court action should the two disputed proclamations be included in such a Bill, did not support the cabinet's decision, Gerwel said. He added the cabinet had unanimously agreed that every effort should be made to ensure that the local government elections go ahead in most provinces on November.
