ELECTION COMMITTEE RELEASES NOMINATIONS FOR LOCAL ELECTIONS JOHANNESBURG Sept 22 Sapa Greater Johannesburg Transitional Metropolitan Council returning officer Nicky Padaychee on Friday released names of parties and candidates standing on the proportional representation and individual ward lists in November's local government elections. The returning officers for the Southern, Eastern, Northern and Western metropolitan substructures also announced the parties and candidates standing in their areas. Election co-ordinator Tony Thompson said a total of 49 political parties had submitted applications, fielding around 690 candidates. But this figure included duplications and rejected applications. A final list would only be available on Saturday. The following parties have been accepted on the proportional representation list: - in the Johannesburg TMC: African Christian Democratic Party, African National Congress, Community Indaba, Conservative Party, Democratic Party, Freedom Front, Inkatha Freedom Party, National Party, Pan Africanist Congress, Peoples' Progressive Party, Residents and Ratepayers' Alliance and Sofasonke Party. The Homeless Party and the United Christian Party were rejected. - in the Southern Metropolitan substructure: ACDP, ANC, Asinamali Party, Community Indaba, Congress Party, CP, DP, FF, IFP, NP, PAC, Residents and Ratepayers' Alliance, Sofasonke Party, South African Residents' Organisation, United Peoples' Parties and Women's Party. The African Muslim Party was rejected. - in the Northern Metropolitan substructure: ACDP, ANC, Asinamali Party, CP, DP, FF, IFP, NP, PAC and Residents' and Ratepayers' Alliance. The Sofasonke Party and Community Indaba were rejected. - in the Eastern Metropolitan substructure: ACDP, ANC, DP, FF, IFP, PAC, Residents and Ratepayers' Alliance and NP. None were rejected.
