NP WELCOMES COMMITMENT TO SINGLE ELECTION DAY IN KWAZULU-NATAL DURBAN Sept 21 Sapa The National Party in KwaZuluNatal welcomed the provincial government's commitment to holding local government elections on a single day in March next year. The NP warned, however, in a statement that a final date needed to be decided as soon as possible. "KwaZulu-Natal cannot afford any more uncertainty, as it only destabilises the province further." Local government anappealed for a single voting day for the province during a recent meeting with Constitutional Affairs Minister Roelf Meyer. It transpired, however, that a new date would only be discussed on October 13. "This seems to be an unnecessary delay which certainly nullifies attempts to gain time to iron out problems which are causing the delay in the first place," the NP said. The NP also emphasised that broad consultation was needed with regard to election issues, and in particular that traditional leaders should be consulted.
