PIK BOTHA MEETS EAST RAND NP CANDIDATES JOHANNESBURG Sept 20 Sapa National Party Gauteng leader Pik Botha on Wednesday night met the party's East Rand local government election candidates. In a pep talk at the Boksburg Civic Centre, Botha told about 120 candidates they should set their sights higher than just town and city council representation. "Quality brings results. We have quality candidates." Botha said the NP could now prove its capabilities, unlike in the April 1994 general election when people voted for freedom and liberation. "It was relatively easy for a party such as the African National Congress to pose as the party that brought freedom. "It was extremely difficult for the NP then to convey the true message of the changed, new NP." There would be no irregularities during the November 1 elections as voters' rolls could be checked afterwards. Uncertainty characterised South Africa almost 18 months after the general election, Botha said, referring to the crime levels and the abolition of the death penalty, unemployment, education, foreign investment and moves to make legalise abortion. Botha urged all candidates to attend a major NP rally on October 10 where national leader F W de Klerk would address them.
