NP SHOULD VOTE AGAINST STAGGERED LOCAL POLLS: CP

The National Party should join other opposition parties in voting 
against amendments to the interim Constitution for staggered local 
elections, the Conservative Party said on Monday. were the NP and 
ANC - as they did in 1994 - not ensuring that this election would 
also result in fraud, intimidation, and, where there are no voters' 
rolls, even violence and insurrection, CP leader Ferdi Hartzenberg 
asked.

On the Western Cape's dispute with central government, he said
the NP leadership had given the region the cold-shoulder by not
supporting Premier Hernus Kriel in the Cape Metropole demarcation
row.

"The NP leadership has apparently favoured (Constitutional and
Provincial Affairs Minister) Roelf Meyer's view and has turned its
back on Premier Kriel," he said.
