ROELF MEYER ON LOCAL ELECTIONS PRETORIA Aug 26 Sapa Local government elections will go ahead on November 1 even if the Western Cape application in the Constitutional Court succeeds next week, Provincial Affairs and Constitutional Development Minister Roelf Meyer said on Saturday. "Media reports create the impression that local government elections cannot take place...This is not the case. In essence, the case concerns the legality of two proclamations amending the Local Government Transition Act," Meyer said on a statement. "A negative judgement may also affect other such proclamations, but the Transition Act, itself is not involved." Meyer said procedures are in "any event available to prevent or correct any disturbing effect" on the legal framework for the holding of the elections.
