VOTERS GIVEN ANOTHER CHANCE TO REGISTER JOHANNESBURG Aug 23 Sapa Potential voters who haven't registered yet are to be given another chance to do so next month, SABC radio reported on Wednesday. Constitutional Development Minister Roelf Meyer said people can register on supplementary voters' rolls from September 11 to 25. Registration forms received after the June 5 deadline will also be included on the supplementary rolls. Meyer said no further registration will be allowed after September 25, except for people turning 18 in areas which have been exempted from holding local government elections on November 1. Inspection time for voters' rolls will also be extended to September 25. Meyer urged people to check that their names appear on voters rolls. The Freedom Front said the ministry's announcement amounted to a "blatant departure from regulations and a misuse of power". Pieter Groenewald, the FF's spokesman on local government, said in a statement that it appeared that certain political parties had become aware of poor registration in certain areas and that they would fare badly badly because of this. They were now taking desparate measures to register voters in these areas.
