LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS Issued by: Justice and Freedom Alliance 16 August 1995 The Justice and Freedom Alliance (JAFA) supports the call by Inkatha, The Freedom Front, and sections of the National and Democratic Parties; for the scrapping of the 2% signature ruling, in respect to the November 1 election. Canvassing results have shown us that a vast majority of the Gauteng electorate are in favour of the measures we propose. Speaking in Johannesburg, JAFA CEO and spokesman Mr Barry Nilsson stressed that ward boundaries in Gauteng have not yet been made public. After publication of these, only three weeks will remain for obtaining signatures and verifying them against the voters roll. The security situation in parts of Gauteng also makes it dangerous for canvassers to visit potential voters after hours, and access to many blocks of flats will be denied to canvassers, as people are afraid to admit unknown persons. Intimidation, and physical attacks on canvassers are a very real possibility. JAFA President, Mr Simon Mothwa, has also recommended the delay to March 1996 of all elections in the Western Cape, in view of the postponement for greater Cape Town and its environs, which represents the commercial, industrial and population hub of the Province.
