TAU urges members not to take part in local elections

The Transvaal Agricultural Union would dissuade its members
from participating in November's local government elections, it
said on Friday.

In a statement in Pretoria TAU president Dries Bruwer said it
was of no use for farmers to take part in a system which gave power
to "incompetent persons to decide over the farmers' weal and woe".

Farmers were not prepared to be financially ruined in addition
to not having a say in how they were to be taxed, nor in how their
taxes were spent, he said.

Great confrontation could be avoided by not forcing farmers
into a system which they opposed, he added.
