ANC GAUTENG PRESS STATEMENT ON POSTPONEMENT OF NOVEMBER 1 ELECTIONS 20 July 1995 The African National Congress in the Gauteng Province puts it full weight behind President Mandela's call for the local government elections to go ahead as planned on November 1st, 1995, despite problems in Gauteng, Kwazulu-Natal and the Western Cape. It is our wish that the current deadlock over demarcation of the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Chamber, be resolved as speedily as possible so that this province can also have its elections on November 1. However, we are disturbed by the delay of the sitting of the Electoral Court to settle the dispute. It is in the interest of the entire province that the matter be resolved as speedily as possible. We also reiterate our view that any postponement of the elections will have far-reaching consequences for the delivery process of the Reconstruction and Development Programme. We call upon the Nationalist Party and the DP to go back to the drawing boards and come up with amicable solutions to the problem of the demarcation of the Greater Johannesburg TMC.
