ANC opposes delay of local government elections JOHANNESBURG July 19 Sapa The African National Congress warned on Wednesday that postponement of the local government elections could have far-reaching consequences for the reconstruction and development programme. Every effort should be made to ensure the elections were held on November 1, the ANC said in a statement. The ANC had noted calls for postponement from the Pan Africanist Congress, Freedom Front, Democratic Party and the Conservative Party, on account of problems with demarcation and registration. These problems did exist but were not insurmountable. On the demarcation problems being experienced in Gauteng, KwaZulu/Natal and the Western Cape, the ANC said these required a political solution rather than a legal or technical approach.
