NCEBA FAKUANC METRO MAYOR CANDIDATE - PORT ELIZABETHNCEBA FAKU, the ANC candidate for Port Elizabeth Metropolitan Council Mayor, is one of the city's most prominent and celebrated citizens. Born in New Brighton in Port Elizabeth in 1956, Faku was schooled at Cowan High and Lovedale College in Alice. He complete his matric in 1978 while serving 13 years on Robben Island. Following his release, he was a regional organiser for the ANC in the Eastern Cape and held the ANC/SACP Local Government portfolio. In 1995 he was elected ANC Regional Chairperson. In 1994 he was elected Chairperson of the Port Elizabeth Transitional Local Council, and following South Africa's first democratic local government elections in 1995 was elected Mayor of the City of Port Elizabeth. Faku is the recipient of numerous awards and honorary memberships, including the Eastern Cape Communicator of the year 1994, PMR Silver Arrow Award for Most Admired Mayor 1998 and PMR Golden Arrow Award for Most Effective Mayor 1999. He is a patron of numerous cultural, sporting and community initiatives in the Port Elizabeth area. Faku is currently also an executive member of the Eastern Cape Local Government Association.
