GAUTENG PROVINCIAL CAMPAIGN AND MANIFESTO LAUNCH

Issued by African National Congress - Gauteng

15 January 2004

Following a successful ANC National Campaign and Manifesto launch in Kwazulu Natal over the weekend, ANC Gauteng Province will launch its election campaign on Sunday 18 January at Orlando Stadium. We do this confident of repeating our overwhelming 1999 election results, which gave the ANC 68% of the votes in Gauteng

Our campaign while being officially launched on Sunday began immediately after the 1999 elections. Branches of the ANC have been established in almost all of the 446 wards of Gauteng and we now have election teams in all 2087 voting districts in this province. Since July 2003 our campaign workers have visited over 1 million homes to talk about voter registration. We will in the course of the next few weeks double the number and aim to visit every home in Gauteng before the elections. This we can do because of the strength of our campaign structures and the level of enthusiasm of our volunteers.

We are also confident that we will break new ground in this campaign and will take our message to all voters in this province. Through our work, we are sure of increasing our support among white, coloured and Indian voters. This is part of our principled commitment to non-racialism.

We are also proud of our track record in Government in this province and say without a shadow of doubt that Gauteng is a better place to live in since 1994. The ANC government in Gauteng has done a lot in the past ten years towards good governance, social development, economic development and political stability of our province. Through many of our programmes we have already laid the foundation for the implementation of the 2004 manifesto.

Our launch will be addressed by ANC Deputy President Jacob Zuma and the Provincial Chairperson Mbhazima Shilowa. It will also feature prominent personalities from various sectors e.g sport, entertainment, business etc who will publicly endorse our manifesto. Our substantial election machinery has been hard at work to ensure a good attendance at the rally and to deliver this overwhelming victory. This machinery will further be strengthened by the candidates who will join our Soweto canvassers on Friday and Saturday as part of the build up towards the rally.

We once again call on all the people of Gauteng (particularly the youth) who have not yet registered, to do so on the 24th and 25th January when the IEC will be opening its registration centres throughout the province for the last time. We are confident that people will use the opportunity to exercise their hard won democratic rights.
