Ensure accountable and clean government
A better life for all
Our efforts to alleviate poverty are still hampered by corrupt officials, who
take resources meant for the poor for themselves. Others are lazy and inefficient,
showing little regard for the very people they are supposed to serve.
Over the next five years, together with the people, the ANC will:
- Deal effectively with corrupt civil servants and public officials by strengthening
existing anti-corruption structures and systems.
- Work with citizens to monitor those who work in government offices and
encourage the spirit of Batho Pele.
- Ensure quicker and more effective intervention in local government, where
there are problems in implementing programmes of social delivery.
- Improve interaction between government and the people through accountable
public representatives, one-stop government centres and izimbizo,
- Ensure people can take advantage of the opportunities provided by democracy,
by improving access to government information.
- Improve citizen’s exercise of their rights by strengthening all institutions
of democracy.
We face the future with confidence because over the last ten years, together
with you, we have been at the head of the national effort to change our country
for the better.Together we can and will do more.
Build safer communities
During the first decade of our freedom, we worked together to improve
the lives of all South Africans.
We have made remarkable progress. But much more still needs to be done.
Many communities are still plagued by crime and violence. Despite a drop in
almost all serious crimes, individuals and families still fall victim to theft,
assault, rape, child abuse and murder.
Over the next five years, together with the people, the ANC will:
- Make the police more effective, by deploying more than 150,000 police in
active duty, with more visible policing, better training, better management
and more effective community liaison.
- Ensure criminals are severely dealt with, by strengthening the prosecution
system and agencies like the police and the Scorpions, and improving coordination
between police, prosecutors, magistrates and prison officials.
- Tackle the abuse of women and children, by setting up even more special
courts to deal with these cases.
- Massively reduce cross-border crime by improving the protection of our
borders.
