ANC statement on the murder of a Khayelitsha toddler

29 June 2009

The African National Congress (ANC) is outraged at the continued abuse and murder of children in South Africa, particularly in the Western Cape. The ANC is shocked by the murder in Cape Town’s Khayelitsha of three-year-old Viwe Mnembe who was allegedly kidnapped and killed by her mother’s boyfriend over a R500 ransom.

The murder of the toddler strengthens the ANC’s resolve to revive street and area committees throughout the country, to work with the police and render our committees crime-free and child-friendly. We call on all ANC branches in the Western Cape and other provinces to intensify the fight against crime and work with police to protect communities – particularly women and children. One child molested or killed is one too many.

In a campaign to ensure safer streets and secured communities, ANC branches should take responsibility in implementing, a fight against crime - one of the key priority areas in the ANC 2009 Manifesto.
