ANC statement on judgement on `congress of the people` application
12 December 2008
The African National Congress is disappointed at the outcome of its urgent application to prevent a new political party calling itself `Congress of the People`. The judgement was handed down in the Pretoria High Court this morning (12 December 2008).
The ANC is nevertheless grateful for the opportunity to state its case in court, and that the matter was considered sufficiently important to be heard by a full bench.
The Congress of the People of 1955 was a watershed moment in the history of our struggle, and should stand as a monument to the determination of the South African people to be free.
The ANC does not believe that this name should be appropriated for the exclusive use of any political party, particularly one that had no involvement in that historic event.
The ANC intends to appeal the judgement.
