ANC statement on the election of Kgalema Motlanthe as President of the Republic of South Africa

25 September 2008

The African National Congress (ANC) congratulates its Deputy President, Kgalema Motlanthe, on being elected President of the Republic of South Africa.

His election to this office sends a signal to the country, our neighbours and the international community of the ANC`s commitment to maintain stability and continuity in government.

The ANC has always prided itself on having leaders who put the needs of the country and people above their own interests, no matter how challenging the circumstances. Motlanthe belongs to that class of leadership.

The ANC expresses its gratitude to President Thabo Mbeki for his outstanding contribution during his tenure as president of the country.

The ANC pledges itself to support the government led by President Motlanthe as it works to ensure that service delivery continues uninterrupted. We call on all South Africans to work together with government and its leadership to advance the struggle for a better life for all.

The ANC will now focus all its energies on preparing for the 2009 elections and the new administration next year.
