ANC statement on the court challenge

3 November 2008

The African National Congress (ANC) has taken note of media reports suggesting that the political grouping spearheaded by Mbhazima Shilowa, Mosiuoa Lekota and Mluleki George has settled for the name South African Democratic Congress.

The ANC, which last week lodged an urgent High Court application to prevent the use of names or designations that may be confusingly similar to the name and trademark of the organisation, is at this stage not in a position to stop the legal action until it gets an official letter in writing from leaders of the new political grouping.

We will not oppose the use of the name SA Democratic Congress as our application specifically referred to the names South Africa National Congress and/or South Africa National Convention and/or SANC.

By bringing the application the ANC sought to assert its legal rights to protect its trademark, name and identity from being appropriated to serve other people`s political aspirations.
