ANC NWC statement on the resignation of Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa

29 September 2008

The African National Congress (ANC) National Working Committee (NWC), at its fortnightly meeting in Johannesburg today (29 September 2008), acknowledged the resignation of Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa.

The NWC expressed its appreciation for the contribution made by Shilowa as premier of the province over the last nine years.

The NWC agreed that a new premier should be elected without delay.

Guided by the process agreed upon at the ANC`s Polokwane Conference in December 2007, the Gauteng Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) will provide the national leadership with three possible candidates.

The ANC national leadership will indicate which of the candidates should fill the vacancy. This process is expected to be completed within the next few days.
