ANC mourns the death of Miriam Makeba

10 November 2008

The African National Congress (ANC) is deeply saddened to learn of the death of world-acclaimed and legendary South African singer Miriam Makeba.

Her untimely death in Italy at the age of 76 has robbed the music fraternity, country and the world of one of the artists who contributed immensely - through music - to the liberation of South Africa.

We pay homage to "Mama Africa" as we have affectionately known her. During apartheid, Makeba carried the message for the emancipation of South Africa. She is also remembered for being the first black African woman to win a Grammy Award.

The ANC will forever treasure the contribution made by Miriam Makeba in the struggle for liberation and the building of our democracy.

The ANC extends its condolences to her family, friends and relatives.

May her soul rest in peace.
