ANC media statement on upcoming by-elections

1 July 2009

As the African National Congress (ANC) gears up to contest yet another round of by-elections in some parts of the country, the organisation calls on voters to endorse its ward candidates on 8 July 2009.

Having committed itself to key priority areas which include crime fighting, rural development, health and education, the ANC put up a good performance in previous by-elections and is confident to attain a solid win next month.

In preparation to contest by-elections in nine wards, covering 39 voting districts in the Eastern Cape (East London and Cofimvaba), Free State (Mangaung, Bethlehem and Sasolburg) and Gauteng (Johannesburg), we have registered all our candidates. Our mass mobilisation campaign, which includes public meetings, posters with photographs of ANC ward candidates, is in full steam.

We pledge to deliver on our priority areas and urge the people to ensure the ANC’s overwhelming victory in the by-elections, which we regard as seriously as the 2009 national polls.
