ANC media statement on by-elections
11 August 2009
The African National Congress (ANC) encourages people to come out in their numbers and vote for the ANC in tomorrow’s (12 August 2009) municipal by-elections to take place in three provinces.
Municipal by-elections in five wards will be contested in KwaZulu-Natal (Indaka, Okhahlamba, eNqutu, Ladysmith and Umvoti), one in the Northern Cape (Pofadder) and another in the Western Cape (Ceres).
We also support calls for political tolerance by provincial ANC and Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leaders in KwaZulu-Natal. The country’s Constitution, which we all subscribe to, makes provision for multiparty democracy and protects freedom of speech and association. We call on our members and ANC branches to heed the message of political tolerance during all polls.
Councillors are at the coalface of service delivery and the ANC regards municipal by-elections as being important. Only through casting their ballots in elections, can active communities hold elected leaders at municipal level to account.
