MPs Undertake Constituency Work

25 September 2009

Members of Parliament of all political parties, the majority of whom belong to the African National Congress, will undertake a weeklong period of constituency work within their communities from 28 September to 2 October 2009.

Constituency-based programmes are important as they afford MPs an opportunity to update the communities they serve on Parliament’s legislative outcomes and assist in enhancing government service delivery through an interactive process with the people. Constituency work is one of the two important components of the programme of Parliament.

The current constituency work season takes place amid a rigorous process, led by the Office of the Chief Whip, aimed at transforming Parliamentary Constituency Offices (PCOs) into one-stop centres within the communities they are located. This process will see national and provincial constituency offices merging resources and establishing inclusive management committees responsible for the running of the PCOs.

The synchronisation of the work of MPs, provincial legislators and councillors at community level is necessary in enhancing our capacity to perform oversight and monitoring of government service delivery programmes.

The role of PCOs is to ensure that MPs remain in touch with the people on the ground and that they are familiar with the challenges they face. This is essential in monitoring the quality of services rendered and in ensuring that government programmes speak to the hardships our people face in their daily lives.

Constituency work is one of the key areas through which we seek to deepen our historical mission of liberating our society from economic and social bondage. The ANC remains the only political party that has a comprehensive plan for the improvement of the quality of life of South Africans of all races.

ANC Members of Parliament will at the conclusion of the constituency work on 2 October, account in form of a report detailing their activities during this period.

The Office of the Chief Whip wishes all MPs well as they embark on this crucial parliamentary programme.
