ANC Member’s Statements in the National Assembly

15 August 2005

Honourable DAA Olifant:

As we celebrate Heritage Month, let us once again acknowledge that our commitment to conflict resolution and to building lasting peace is a fundamental part of our heritage as South Africans.

The Nobel Peace Prize has always been awarded to a single individual, an organisation, or else shared among individuals or groups, but it has never given recognition to a group that has been expressly formed for this purpose. Organisers of the “1000 Women for the Nobel Prize 2005” have searched the world for women who are performing the vital task of building peace in their homes, their communities, countries and the world. Therefore the organisers have nominated them as a group for consideration by the Nobel Committee in Oslo.

Die volgende 14 Suid- Afrikaanse vroue is genomineer vir die gesogde prys – hulle is Nosandla Malindi, Nikiwe Nyamakazi, Edith Matshikiza, Regina Makunga, Mirriam Malala, Adelle Potgieter, Lesley Ann Foster, Jenet Dlamini, Busisiwe Hlomuka en Veronica Khoza. We are honoured to have 4 of the women, those from the Western Cape here with us today – they are Lorna Philander, Daphne Jansen, Cordelia Nozukile Tshaka and Rolene Miller. We are also honoured to have the co- coordinator, Nomvuyo Skota- Dayile, here with us today.

The Freedom Charter promises us that there shall be peace and friendship and that the doors of learning and culture shall be opened. We honour and congratulate these women in further opening these doors.
I thank you.

Honourable Dr.A.N.Luthuli

The African National Congress notes with concern the recent outbreak of typhoid, this life-threatening disease that has already led to two fatalities and left almost three hundred, mostly poor people infected.

However, we are heartened by the efforts of Joint Operation Command of the Province, Municipality and sector Departments, that has since September 7, inspected, created awareness and deployed experts to Delmas to arrest the situation. Since then, health facilities are operating twenty-four hours, water purification in the community, at schools and mines are being improved. In addition, extra ambulances, environmental surveillance and veterinary support to dairy and vegetable farms have been bolstered to contain any further deterioration.

It certainly pronounced in no small measure that we are proactive in the face of disasters at a micro level. Furthermore, it demonstrates the commitment by the African National Congress to the poor and more so to the poor in far-flung rural areas. Also, we recognize the co-operation by the three spheres of government and the involvement of other agencies. We have no doubt that the lessons learnt in this outbreak and the mechanisms put in place will be sustained for any similar eventuality.

The African National Congress extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the two victims, and wish the sick speedy recovery.
I thank you.

Statement on Service Delivery

The African National Congress led government can provide more resources and introduce quality health care, for this programme to succeed requires public servants who serve the people with respect, dignity and efficiency, and active citizenship and a spirit of responsibility and volunteerism amongst all of us.

Some Members of this House and some sections of the media always complain about things getting worse under this government, all the time allocating blame and demanding retribution.

Given the enormous challenges facing our health services, however it is heartening to see and hear stories of dedication and hard work by our civil servants.

As Mr Andre Hendricks of Johannesburg indicated. He says “today I want to shout praise from the rooftops about the Kalafong Hospital…they took such a good care of my mother during her last 70 days. She was treated with such love, care and competence, that words cannot express my innermost feelings. The dedication of all the medical staff and the post-op service provided by the staff, disproves all the prophets of doom”

We members of the African National Congress recommit ourselves to redouble our efforts in partnership with our people to deliver better service.
I thank you.

Umpoposho Ngorhwaphilizo.
